Montado

The montado is one of Portugal’s most iconic landscapes, and can be found specifically in Alentejo, but this sanctuary of biodiversity, which was first shaped by human activity many centuries ago, is also an endangered habitat.

Cereal steppe: soil that produces, habitat that takes care

Extensive and unprotected plains, flattened by time and cereal growing, with low grasses, scattered trees and shrubs. This is how the Portuguese cereal steppe, which is also called pseudo-steppe, is a characteristic habitat of the Alentejo landscape and is home to a wide range of species, in particular birds.

Riparian forest is a characteristic habitat of the banks of permanent rivers and constitutes a transition zone between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Dense, cool, and shaded, it is home to countless forms of life and this is just the most visible part of its high ecological value.
